Oakland, CA - Head Coach Tim Hart would like to welcome the men’s soccer team back to Holy Names University for the start of the 2008 soccer season. Hart has recruited players domestically and abroad to join his returning squad for a total of 30 players. The team will start their campaign this year at Point Loma Nazarene on September 5th after two scrimmages against the Academy of Arts and CSU Chico.
Hart who was previously a player and assistant coach of the men’s soccer program is excited about the season and the opportunities that lay ahead. “The boys have all come back extremely fit and are in very high spirits. They have settled in well to the preseason training program and bonded well as a group. There have been a few injuries but on the whole everyone seems fit and happy.” HNU Men’s soccer hopes to retain the Cal Pac title this year after being the holders for the last 2 years. This season the Cal Pac teams will play each other twice in regular season and HNU soccer will play 4 non conference games.
“We have a good mix of ages, different talents, and diversity among the team. We have players that have played in many different backgrounds and countries. It is vital that our younger players learn off of the more experienced players in the group. My goal this year is to have a team that enjoys coming to training every day and makes long lasting relationships with everyone on the team. Another goal is to have my players excel in the classroom. With those two things the team will be as successful as it can be and we will win games and have fun along the way.” Hart has high confidence in the soccer program for this fall and also in his coaching staff.
“I am fortunate to have one of my old team mates in Brendan McManus join me as an assistant coach. Brendan has a lot of knowledge and was a good player. Nick Howliston also has a knowledge that will help us as he has been coach club soccer, high school soccer, junior college soccer, and ODP for several years out here. I am also extremely happy to have volunteer coaches in Ivan Kepcija, Beto Vega, and Edwin Pouzzad all players that played with me and know HNU and what we need to do to be successful.”
