As the last week of competition in the Cal Pac Conference winds down, HNU would like to recognize a number of student athletes who will be playing in their final season of competition. Seniors Riley Tang and Andrew McDowell will be the first four year members and graduates of the HNU men’s volleyball program.

Since its inaugural season in 2006 Tang (Waianae, HI) and McDowell (Los Gatos, CA) have been staples of the HNU Men’s Volleyball program. Both are great athletes who have shown tremendous dedication and loyalty to HNU and the men’s volleyball program. The two seniors were selected as team captains in their senior season, displaying outstanding leadership and work ethic respected by their peers. Riley and Andrew have both displayed the character of a champion throughout their tenure at HNU. The Men’s volleyball program is proud to say that Riley Tang and Andrew McDowell have been, and will always be Hawks!

In its first season of competition in the Cal Pac Conference, the HNU women’s softball program is leading the conference going into the final weekend. Women’s softball will say goodbye to a group of seniors who have each in their own way contributed to perhaps a conference championship.

Alicia Ach #8
Alicia, “Loosh,” came to the hawks after playing at Sacramento State for 1 year and Cal State East bay for another. She is a wall behind the play, rarely letting anything get by her, she is a blocking specialist, but her biggest asset is the way she interacts with the pitchers. Alicia is able to calm down the Hawk pitchers even in the toughest situations. Alicia has gone down in the record books as having both the first hit, double and triple in the history of Holy Names University Softball.

Valerie Briones #9
Valerie, “Don’t call me Val,” came to HNU for her senior year after playing her junior year at University of Hawaii Hilo. She has a feisty and aggressive style of play which allows her to be a threat at the plate, on the bases, and in center field. She has made some memorable catches for the Hawks because of her incredible range and talent for making diving catches. Valarie is also a self proclaimed comedian and is seen making her teammates laugh both on and off the field.

Tiffany Chan #28
Tiffany, "T-Chan," is a Castro Valley native who came to the hawks this year after returning from Florida A&M where she played her junior season. Tiffany is right handed pitcher with a wicked drop ball and a wide variety of pitches she uses to keep batters off balance. No slouch at the plate either, Tiffany has proven to be a clutch hitter and come through for the Hawks in many tight situations. Tiffany has a can do attitude and her bubbly energy is contagious to everyone around her.

Megan Harrison #25
You will often hearing the roaring chant of “Megatron” at the HNU softball games and that is for none of then Megan Harrison who came to the Hawks from the College of the Canyons. Megan may not look like she is a power hitter, but she led the team in homeruns and RBI's during the '08 season. Megan is also weapon in the outfield with a powerful arm that runners rarely challenge. Megan is a confident player who knows her strengths and uses them to her advantage.

Ashly Merchant #6
Ashly, "AshMerch," is a Folsom native an avid fan of the color pink. She played 2 years at American River College before becoming a Hawk. Ashly is a utility player for the Hawks, she can play infield, outfield and is also a pitcher, though she spends most of her time at second base. At the plate, Ashly gets her job done and is a very proficient bunter. Ashly is also a very talented singer and for the last 2 seasons has sung the National Anthem for the Hawk's home games.

Stephanie Neal #00
Stephanie, "StephNeal," is one of the Hawk's weapons of speed. She is a local and transferred from Chabot College to play for the Hawks. Last year, she led the league in stolen bases and has racked them up again this year. Stephanie is also a threat in the outfield where she was somehow able to record a double play by throwing the ball over the dugout last season. Stephanie is also remembered as the Hawk player who her left her jersey at the hotel, not once, but twice.

Ebony Thorpe #22
Ebony, "E-bo," is originally from San Diego and came to the Hawks after playing a year at Patten University. Few people hit the ball as hard as Ebony. A natural lefty, Ebony hit the first homerun for the Hawks during fall ball of ‘07…while slapping. Ebony is a very naturally gifted athlete and is a very strong first baseman. Though many found E-bo a little intimidating in the beginning of the season, she is an excellent mentor towards the younger girls and is the first to congratulate a teammate on a job well done.

Lyndsey Van Slyke #7
Lyndsey is a third baseman and team captain who came to the Hawks from Diablo Valley College. Lyndsey is a power hitter and uses her quick reflexes to be successful in the hot corner. Lyndsey is also a motivator to the team. When others are feeling down, she uses her constant positive energy to pick them up. Lyndsey is the first one to volunteer to help out a teammate, which makes her a great captain for the Hawks.
