By Francisco Gomez

Juan Gomez Finishes his season by earning a spot to compete at Nationals in which he poured his heart out to finish a grueling marathon (26.2 miles) under extreme weather conditions. For a distance runner there is nothing worse than over heating and dehydrating throughout a race. When Juan step on the line at nationals this past saturday May 23th, he was culminating a very successful season that included several key wins which showed a very promising future at the national championship.

Juan did not finished in the top 10 as he was expected to but did however race the best race of his life. He was there to win and represent Holy Names University to best of his ability. No one can say he didn't try, he lead for 20 miles holding a very fast pace that under normal marathon conditions and by that I mean no humidity would have definitively placed him in a sure top 5 placing. When the weather caught up him around the 21 mile mark and 5 miles to go to the finish, he could of easily stopped and not finished the race, like the 13 other athletes that chose to stopped and give up but not Juan he was determine to finish and not allow the humidity to win so he pushed through the muscle cramps and pain to a time of 2 hours and 52 minutes, which was 30 minutes slower than what was expected but that wasn't important anymore, the goal quickly changed to overwrite the brain, specifically the pain receptors that were screaming for Juan to stop and give in to the pain and the exhaustion.

I was proud of Juan and feel fortunate to witness his amazing race that took a lot of heart and determination to finish. I have been in the position before where the body runs out glucose, water, minerals and begans to over heat and dissolve muscle tissue as a way to force you to stop, this is what is commonly known as th 'THE WALL"...

Congratulatioins to Juan for a very sucessful season and for running at Nationals to win not to jog. He will be running the San Francisco Marathon July 26th which should allow him to set that personal best he is seeking, the weather is usually 40 degrees with zero humidity.
