Hawks advance to Championship game with win over Maritime 70-59

No. 1 HNU and No. 2 Menlo face off for tournament championship set for Saturday.

HAYWARD, Calif – The No. 21 Holy Names University Women’s Basketball team used a second half surge to pull ahead and take the win against CSU Maritime 70-59 in seminfinal action on Friday night.

Raquel Hyche had 22 points on 7 for 14 shooting, including 8 for 10 from the free throw line. Britni Ronolo added 11 points, 3 rebounds and 3 steals in the victory.

With the win, Holy Names, the top-seed in the tournament improved to 23-8 on the year while CSU Maritime ended its season with a 15-17 mark. The Hawks will face Menlo College (20-7) in the finals on Saturday, February 28. No. 2 Menlo defeated No. 3 Dominican University 71-63 to advance to the finals.

The Keelhaulers started the game off with a 6-0 lead before a crafty step through move by Liz Widgren (8 rebounds, 4 points) put the Hawks on the board with 17:23 remaining. The Hawks took their first lead of the game with 8:32 left when Alexandria Gonzalez (5 points) scored on a baseline drive to take the 18-17 lead. On the following possession Sarah Henning (8 points, 6 rebounds, 1 block) was able to score on a baseline jumper. HNU extended their lead to as much as 29 to 23 with 3:16 remaining, but Maritime was able to storm back and take the 32 to 31 lead into halftime.

The Hawks were even on the boards with Maritime at the half with 16 each. HNU could not capitalize on their free throw attempts in the opening 20 minutes, only making 4 of 10.

A 13-2 run in a 5 minute span gave the Hawks their largest lead at 56 to 45 with 5:10 left in the game. Maritime was forced to foul and the Hawks were able to make the most of their free throws to seal the win. In the second half, Holy Names went 16 for 18 from the charity stripe.

The Hawks shot 39% while Maritime shot 40% for the evening. Maritime also outrebounded the Hawks 37 to 35. HNU was able to force 24 turnovers while only turning over the ball 12 times as a team.

The Hawks will battle for the Conference’s only automatic bid to the NAIA Division II National Tournament tomorrow against Menlo College. Tip off is set for 5pm on the campus of CSU East Bay.
