Hawks Clip Dominican Penguins; Tame Bethany Bruins on CAL's home turf
HNU Softball has been working hard at meeting the challenges of Cal Pac conference play, most recently by taking two wins each off of both Dominican University and Bethany University (8-0 (5), 8-0 (5) and 7-5, 10-2 (5) respectively).
Dominican struggled to generate 5 hits for both games against strong pitching by Stephani Fairclough in game 1 and Tiffany Chan in game 2. Fairclough threw for 3 hits, 1 walk and 8 strike-outs, with the freshman leading leading by example for senior Chan to pitch 2 hits, 3 walks and 4 strike-outs to end the doubleheader. HNU's offense had help from all around with Jessica Merriam and Lacey Parodi both smacking perfect averages (2 for 2 for Parodi and Merriam hitting 3 for 3) while Stephanie Neal and Valerie Briones each went 3 for 4 at the plate, with 2 RBI's each. The Hawks had 9 runs on 16 hits and 8 RBI's. HNU rode the wave into game 2 with 8 runs on 8 hits with 7 RBI's. Game leaders were, again, Briones and Parodi at 2 for 3, each.
Bethany gave HNU a run in game 1 by scoring 4 in the top of the 4th, but the Hawks responded with 3 in the same inning. HNU added another 4 in the bottom of the 6th and held on against another Bruin run in the top of the 7th to win 7-5 on 7 runs, 11 hits and 7 RBI's. Catcher Rachael Martinez and pitcher Tiffany Chan both went 2 for 3 with Chan racking up 3 RBI's, while Lacey Parodi hit a solo home run out of CAL's Levine-Fricke Softball Field, the site of the match-up. Chan pitched against 9 hits, 5 runs, 4 walks and 7 strike-outs. Game 2 found Martinez and Kara Ferguson each putting in perfect plate appearances with 3 for 3 and 2 for 2 showings, respectively, each with 2 RBI's. HNU scored in the first and never looked back. Fairclough stood up to 4 hits, 2 runs, 1 walk and 6 SO's.
HNU continues it's run for the Cal Pac conference title next weekend.
