OAKLAND, Calif – The Holy Names University Women’s Basketball team was able to to extend its Cal Pac Conference record to 9-0 on Saturday with an 87-82 win over visiting Cal State East Bay.

Two players were able to get double-doubles with Britni Ronolo scoring 17 points and grabbing 14 rebounds (9 of them offensive). Liz Widgren had 15 points and 10 rebounds. Jamie-Leigh Ronolo also contributed 11 points in the win.

The first half saw CSUEB jumping out to a 20-10 lead in the first 6 minutes. HNU called a time out at the 11:56 mark down by 13 points (12-25) and was able to use the next 4 minutes to cut the lead to 5 points (27-32). CSUEB then responded by using the next 3 and a half minutes to hold the Hawks scoreless, going on an 11-0 run. The Hawks called another timeout and used the strong play of Valyncia Hartfield, Jamie Ronolo, Alex Gonzalez, Britni Ronolo and Danika Potestio to then spark a 16-4 run in a 3:45 span. At the half the Pioneers were up 46-43.

At the break East bay shot 50% (including 44% from behind the arc) compared to 42% HNU shot from the field. HNU did hold the edge in points scored by the bench 28-10.

HNU took its first lead of the game (56-55) four minutes into the second half when Sarah Henning scored off an inbounds play. CSUEB reclaimed the lead following a timeout and was able to maintain the edge until 2:25 when HNU retook the lead 78-77.

Following an intentional foul against an East Bay player, Raquel Hyche was able to knock down two free throws to put the Hawks up 80-77 with 2:17 remaining. Following a free throw by Henning with 1:48 remaining the Hawks took a 5 point lead 83-78.

East Bay had a chance to cut the lead to 1 with 19.9 seconds left but was only able to hit one of two free throws. CSUEB had no chance but to foul Larisa Nakasone with 19.2 seconds sending her to the line with a double bonus. Nakasone hit the first putting HNU up 85-82, but the second shot rimmed out and Britni Ronolo was able to grab the offensive board. Holy Names was able to move the ball and avoid being fouled until 6.7 seconds remained sending Jamie Ronolo to the line where she knocked down two free throws to seal the game 87-82.

Despite East Bay shooting 48% for the game compared to HNU’s 33%, the difference was on the rebounding side. The Hawks were able to demolish East Bay on the boards with a 58-37 advantage. HNU almost had as many offensive boards (33) as total rebounds for East Bay. Holy Names also forced 25 turnovers (converting into 25 points) and had 14 steals.

With the win the Hawks continue to hold onto first place with a 9-0 record. They are now two games ahead of second place Menlo College, who lost on Saturday to William Jessup. The two meet up on Thursday at Menlo. Tip off is set for 6pm.
