Joshua Smith is Newest HNU Hawk

Riverside, CA: Holy Names University basketball coach Dennis Jones announced another signing for the 2009-2010 season. Joshua Smith signed his letter of intent to play for the Hawks at his home in Riverside, California.

Smith is a versatile 6’7” Forward who has the ability to hurt opponents both inside and outside. Josh signed with Westmont College out of High School before transferring closer to home for the 2008-2009, spending his sophomore campaign at California Baptist University in Riverside. He appeared in 8 games as a freshman for the Warriors in 2006-2007, and after sitting out the 2007-2008 season, Josh made his debut as a Lancer in the Fall of 2008. He would appear in 21 games for CBU, helping the Lancers to a 22-9 overall mark.

Prior to his two collegiate years, Josh played three years at Riverside’s King High School. Smith was a star performer for the Wolves, earning All-Ivey League honors as a Freshman, Sophomore and Junior. Josh averaged 15 points and 9 rebounds over his three years at King, with a career high 39 points and 15 rebounds against Canyon Springs High School his Junior year.

After three years at King, Smith would play his senior Season at Calvary Chapel High School in Moreno Valley, California. Josh was outstanding for the Lions, averaging 25.7 points and 9.5 rebounds per contest in his Senior season, leading Calvary Chapel to a CIF Championship. For his efforts, Josh was named the SS Division 5AA Most Valuable Player, was an All-Area First Team selection and was named Victory League Player of the Year.
“Josh had a great visit to HNU in the Spring and we are very happy that he will join our Basketball Family. He seemed to fit here almost instantly; although his visit was short he immediately made connections with new and current HNU players.” Said head coach, Dennis Jones, “He is a talented young man, one who I expect to have an impactful season in 2009-2010.”

Joshua was an honor student as a freshman, sophomore and senior while in High School. He will be Majoring in Criminology and Minoring in Biology at Holy Names University.
