ATHERTON, Calif – The No. 21 Holy Names University Women (10-0, 17-7) met up with second place Menlo College Thursday night and came away with a 59-54 win. With the win the Hawks have a 3 game lead in the Cal Pac standings. Menlo drops to 7-3, and is tied with Dominican for second place.

Menlo and Holy Names traded buckets to open the first 6 minutes of the game. The Hawks took the 13-7 lead with 12:15 remaining on a touch pass from Henning out to Jamie Ronolo who spotted up from the left baseline corner for a three. Menlo managed to score after but the Hawks were able to hold Menlo scoreless for nearly the next 7 minutes and taking the 19-9 lead with 4:17 left in the half.

The Hawks then extended the score to 26-13 on a jumper by Alexandria Gonzalez with just under 18 seconds left in the half. HNU used a strong defensive first half to hold Menlo to 15% shooting on 5 for 33 from the field. Holy Names also outrebounded the Oaks 29-25 for the first 20 minutes.

The 13 point lead HNU had virtually disappeared in the opening 3 minutes of the second half as Menlo was able to reel off 10 unanswered points and brought the score to 26-23 with 17:01 remaining.

Menlo took its first lead 38-36 with 9:05 remaining when a Holy Names player fouled a Menlo guard who converted a three-point play. Down 40-39 with 8:18 remaining, Holy Names would use the next 2 minutes and 18 seconds to go on a 10-0 run which brought the score to 49-40. The run was fueled by three Henning free throws and 7 straight points by Raquel Hyche. Menlo was able to score but the Hawks maintained an 8 point lead with 5 minutes to go in the game.

HNU was able to maintain a 10 point lead (56-46) when Chelsie Kadota made 2 free throws with 2:43 remaining. With 1:55 remaining, HNU called a timeout with a 56-48 lead, but made some poor decisions with possessions down the stretch and allowed Menlo to get within 3 points (56-53) with 33.8 seconds left. Menlo was forced to foul Kadota with 25.8 seconds left and she converted on one of two to make it a two possession game, 57-53. Britni Ronolo was able to leak out for an uncontested layup with 10 seconds left to bring the lead to 6 and Menlo ran out of time.

Menlo shot considerably better in the second half (43%) but for the entire game HNU outshot the Oaks 31% to 28%. The Hawks defense was able to force 20 turnovers and create 11 steals. Menlo edged the Hawks in rebounding 47 to 46.
