Hawks use 24-4 run over final 13 minutes to seal the win.

OAKLAND, Calif - On a night where with a win the Hawks could not only clinch a Cal Pac title and capture win number 20 on the season, it was also Senior night. The Lady Hawks four seniors, Liz Widgren, Raquel Hyche, Chelsie Kadota and Junai Dawson were each honored in a post game ceremony following a 63-45 win over Dominican University.

Liz Widgren had a game-high 15 rebounds and 10 points. Larisa Nakasone had 12 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals. Sarah Henning added 10 points, 3 rebounds and 2 blocks. Chelsie Kadota finished with 9 points (3 for 5 from three point range), 2 rebounds and 2 steals.

The Hawks opened up the game running on all cylinders and able to get up by as much as 15 to 8 after 8 minutes of play. Kadota was able to hit 2 three point shots during this span. Dominican then responded to take their first lead of the game 25 to 24 with 3:54 remaining. DU closed the half after this point going on a 5-2 run and heading into the locker room with the 30 to 26 lead.

Dominican had a great first half shooting 47% compared to HNU’s 32%. The Penguins also outrebounded the Hawks 20 to 16.

In the second half, HNU got down by as much as 9 points with 16:50 remaining, but an 11-2 run over the next 3 minutes brought the Hawks back to tie it up 39 to 39 with 13:22 left. The Holy Names defense and offense then took control at the 12:27 mark. Down 39 to 41 the Hawks tied the game at 41 with a Henning put back. HNU continued to produce on the offensive side while Dominican struggled. The Penguins called a time out at the 5:21 mark, with the Hawks up 52-43. DU could get no closer as HNU scored 11 more points over the final 5 minutes.

The Holy Names defense limited Dominican to only 15 second half points on 16% shooting. The final 13 minutes of the game HNU outscored DU 24-4. For the game HNU got 12 steals resulting in 20 points. The HNU bench outscored DU’s bench 19-7 and HNU was able to connect on 79.2% of their free throw attempts.

Coming into the game the Hawks needed a win to clinch at least a tie of the Cal Pac Conference Championship. But with a Menlo loss tonight, the Hawks now hold the title outright with two regular season games remaining. The win also marks the 20th of the season for HNU and will look to increase their total in their final two games at Pacific Union and at William Jessup next week.

HNU CLASS OF 2009 recap:
Junai Dawson: Junai transferred into Holy Names from Merit College 3 years ago and has been a solid contributor ever since. Junai has come back from a season ending shoulder injury last year to start all 27 games this season contributing 8 points a game and a team leading 7.5 rebounds per. She is currently second in the conference in rebounding and blocked shots and has recorded nearly 600 points and 500 rebounds in her career. Junai will be graduating this May with a Double Major in Business Management and Marketing.

Raquel Hyche: Roc appeared in her 100th game tonight becoming just the 15th player in program history to play 100 games in a Hawk uniform. She has scored 668 points in her career good for #19 on the career scoring list. Her 14 points per game average this season is good for the 6th highest single season average in school history and she currently ranks 6th in the conference in scoring and #2 in steals per game. Raquel is a Psychology Major and will be completing her degree in the Fall.

Chelsie Kadota: Chelsie has now played in 117 games as a Hawk good for #8 on the career games played list. In addition to her role as the defensive stopper, matching up against the opponents top threat each night, Chelsie is the #1 three point shooter in program history with a .347 shooting percentage from beyond the arc. Her 86 made three’s puts her at #6 on the career list and tonight became the 23rd member of the Holy Names’ 600 point club. Chelsie will be graduating this May with a Double Major in Business Management and Marketing

Liz Widgren: Liz returned to the court this season after missing nearly two years with a knee injury and has started every game while contributing nearly 8 points and 8 rebounds per. Liz was named to the Cal Pac All-Freshman team in 2005 and was an NAIA Academic All-American following the 2007 season. She was a member of the 2005 team that reached the “Sweet Sixteen” at the NAIA National Tournament. She is currently 7th in the conference in rebounding and 6th in Free Throw percentage and appears in the Top 10 on Holy Names’ career lists for Free Throw’s Made, Attempted, Rebounds, Rebounds per game as well as Feild Goal and Free Throw Percentage. She is one of just 7 players in school history to record over 600 points and 600 rebounds in a career and her 662 career rebounds rank #5 all time. Liz is currently completing a Double Major in Business Management and Marketing
